Solo Travel Peru
Never in my whole life have I experienced so many stairs. A whole week of walking up and up and up to reach the city in the clouds. Climbing over 11,000 feet (3,400m) above sea level sounded much more manageable from the beautiful town of Cusco, Peru.
Having a knowledgeable guide has helped pass the hours of endless ascension. But up we continue, and on we walk. Doing this trek alone has been a spiritual experience, and the higher I climb, the more at peace I feel with myself. Waking each morning to the gorgeous mountain views of the Andes, and pushing my body to its limits has allowed me to experience a true sense of tranquility. After the first day, I fully expected to be on the back of our emergency mule returning to Cusco. Finishing day 2 made me realize that I am stronger than I ever thought possible.
I had made it to camp again, with no need to ride back down the mountain! The days following this realization were easier, almost meditative. Stopping for meals and breaks as needed, making it to each day’s camping ground at my own leisure, sleeping like a baby in my tent. On the final day, woken hours before sunrise to begin our final trek into Macchu Picchu, I had never been prouder. Watching the sunrise from Sungate was the most majestic, magical experience of my life, excitement bubbling through me at the coming day’s adventures in this ancient city.
