Erol Ozan once said ‘’some beautiful paths can’t be discovered without getting lost”. I held this quote in mind as I wandered the streets of Venice, completely entranced by the winding ways, high walls of buildings around me, and small streets ending in canals. Crossing waterways and bridges every chance I could get, I felt that discovery was around every corner. Being able to see my destination but unable to reach it without jumping into a canal was something I had never experienced before now. What a magnificent place to spend my day, and with a map in hand I continued onwards.

I arrived in Venice in the early morning, completely unaware of how the city of canals would take me on a journey to be remembered. This unique city, where hiring a taxi doesn’t always mean jumping in a car, had me in awe since I entered and crossed my first quaint bridge. To wander these streets has been complete freedom, able to follow any twist and turn I desired. I began without a map, believing my natural sense of direction would be enough to get me to where I wanted to be, as it has in so many cities before this. Boy was I wrong! After quickly finding a little tourist shop and purchasing a map, the streets became easier to navigate, and the canal waterways much easier to understand. Hiring a gondola and having a private city tour was the best way to truly get my sense of direction in Venice and experience the city from a whole different perspective.

Arriving at Saint Mark’s Basilica via water taxi had to be one of my highlights. Arriving via the canal, I had not expected the church to be so breathtaking. The intricate sculptures and magnificent frescos at the front of the building were such a surprise I must have stood there looking dumbfounded for longer than I care to admit. Entering the church did not disappoint, and heading to the roof view was one of the best decisions I made. The square and the endless Venetian streets from this height was a view I will never forget. Heading onwards into Saint Mark’s square, the impressive architecture and adventurous feel I had for this city continued. The unique arched walkways and beautiful restaurant terraces had me captivated.

Getting lost among the museums, shops, bell and clock towers, local street entertainment, and of course the pigeons, this square within Venice was truly a sight to behold. Heading onto the Ponte di Rialto bridge was a great way to get a snapshot of the Grande Canal. After seeing this architectural wonder from below on my earlier Gondola tour, I knew I had to experience the view from the Bridge itself. Whilst a bustling area, standing atop this picturesque landmark truly allowed me to feel the ancient charm of this magnificent city. I held high hopes for what was to come for the rest of my day in Venice.
