The Worlds Most Dangerous Road

Pedaling down the world’s most dangerous road at what felt like a million miles an hour, was an unexpected detour in my travels. Having the wind in my face, and skidding around corners all started one night in La Paz. I had heard rumors that just around the corner lay North Yungas road. It is known as the world’s most dangerous road because of the blind corners and terrifying cliff drops that touch the road’s loose stone edge. This also gives the most magnificent views. I decided to join a bicycle group tour group after realizing I did not want to drive the road, but that I had to experience the stunning location.

The tour started first thing in the morning, as my instructor warned me, I would be riding all day. Starting a little further up the road on top of a mountain, I blessed Pachamama to get me down safely. Pachamama represents the fertility of the earth, and rules over all, from crops to mountains. She is responsible for all natural phenomena like earthquakes and is worshipped by Bolivians of all religions. To begin the ride and show my respect, I took a sip of spirits, then poured a sip to the earth, and then on my bike. One for me, one for my ride, and one for Pachamama. My instructor ensured me we were now guaranteed to make the trip safely. With courage in our hearts and a blessing on our bikes, I placed my foot on the pedal and began my adventure.
